video
Hallelujah! This is it! The picture quality of this dvd is amazing. The picture is always bright, sharp, clear, clean, full of details. The definition is stunning. The colors are stunning, and are always very clean. It looks like recent dvds made for movies like 'The Matrix', 'Alien 4', 'The World is not Enough'... And it's still much sharper than most of them. You've got to see it to believe it!
It is made from a very clean Italian uncut print (the titles are in Italian). I've watched the opening murders at least fifteen times, looking for a weakness. I have not found it yet! If you are a maniac, and if you spend all the film with your face stuck to the screen, you may notice rare and small black spots and a little grain (but no more than on a recent movie with a very sharp definition). At a normal distance from your TV, you won't notice a thing.
And what about the "red sleepers", when the girls all sleep downstairs after the rotten food is found? It's amazing. The picture remain as sharp as before! There are some short moments when the pictures is very slightly blurred, but I guess it's because my TV can't do better with saturated reds. Anyway, it looks at least as good as a recent dvd made for a recent movie. As far as I know the most beautiful picture quality for an Argento dvd!
sound
Unfortunately, TF1 Vidéo has used the two original soundtracks, and has not done any remix. They are both Dolby Digital. The French version is Dolby Surround. It's very good most of the time. But it's still a 1977 soundtrack... There is distorsion from time to time. There are moments when it really sounds strange (when Suzy runs through the house in order to escape, at the end). The sound level sometimes changes. Still it should be noticed, that it sounds rather clean, with no "cracks" at all. I really wish they would have done a little more work on this soundtrack.
The Italian version (with French sub titles that can't be turned off) is a rough mono. It sounds old and harsh. It really sounds like an old mono soundtrack, with some rare cracks. But it's still powerful and impressive. Once again I wish they would have taken the four track tape and made the soundtrack we are all dreaming of...

extras
First of all, the menus are really cute, with animation and music all the time. The "select" icons are small red pentacles. The "back to menu" icons are the cristal bird found in Helena Marcos room.
When the dvd starts, you can see Suzy watching herself in a mirror, and then the camera dives in the sink in front of her, where water runs (in fact it's a scene of the film shown backwards...), and you reach the main menu (showing the front of the academy, with dark clouds). Here are the sections:
  • Chapters: You can choose one of the chapter of the movie. Chapters are presented in small animated windows.
  • Language: you can choose the language of the movie (french dolby suround or italian mono).
  • Biography: In fact it's a very complete filmography of Dario scrowling (the same as on IMDB). It ends with the title "I can't sleep"...
  • "One last sight": this section starts with two Italian posters. Then you have texts about the movie. It's about Daria Nicolodi's grandmother who studied music in a school where teachers were practicing black magic! She escaped from it quickly. Later this school was destroyed in a fire. Then it talks a little about Dario's influences for this movie (Thomas de Quincey and Steiner). Dario has made a script for the third "mater" movie, but it was so disapointing, that he threw it away.
  • dvd ROM: unfortunately, my computer can't read it. It seems that there are screen savers (movie posters) and a link to the (poor) TF1 vidéo website.
  • The booklet is just advertisement for other TF1 vidéo products...
  • ...And the interview. It's an audio track. The most famous scenes of the film are shown while the interview runs (20 minutes). For a full transcript of this interview, click here.
