video
This is an anamorphic 1.85 transfer and it shows. When compared to the UK dvd release, the picture quality is stunning. That particular dvd is very dark and the colours suffer terribly. It is also a very soft, grainy picture. No such problem here. The colours are rich and vibrant, a certain 'softness' is still evident but this is more to do with the desired look of the film than the dvd. The black's are handled well and there is very little pixelation or artifacting. The film was shot in 1.66:1 and so there is a little information missing from each side due to the 1.85:1 presentation but not enough to be noticable.

All in all a good transfer which Troma will have a job bettering in the US release.

sound
There are 2 audio tracks; one is in English with French subtitles and the other in French. Both have Dolby Stereo surround. This is not particulary impressive and does not seem to make great use of the surround channel. indeed, it seems almost muted in places. Interestingly, the French audio track sounds quite a bit different with more background noises during the opening crowd scenes.

extras
The usual Filmographies are supplied on the disc in French of course. The French theatrical trailer is also provided. This is only of special note because it shows a shot of Anna's initial rape that is not in the final film.

conclusion
Overall this is a good dvd of a great film. The sound and presentation could be better but it is much, much better than even the mistakenly uncut UK dvd.

Interestingly, the French subtitles are supposed to be displayed all the time during the English language version, something that is common with French dvd's. However, when played on my Panasonic A150, this did not occur. I tried this several times and as long as I played the disc without selecting anything else first, it played the English language version WITHOUT the subtitles. An added bonus.
