[video][sound][extras][conclusion]

This is the highly anticipated 'integral' version of PHENOMENA complete with a second disc full of extras. Well, maybe 'full' is not the right word but more of that later. Firstly a word about the packaging. Dragon have done an excellent job here.

It has a cardboard outer slip case containing a nicely decorated fold out inner with the two discs and a wallet in which the booklet is kept. The discs themselves have some of the best silk screen artwork I have seen on a dvd.

video
Something previous Dragon discs have suffered from is indifferent picture quality with a combination of bad prints and/or transfers. Unfortunately, this disc was always going to be compared to the Anchor Bay dvd and it does not fair well. This is better than some but not that good. Its a sharp, wide screen presentation taken from an Italian print but the transfer is too dark and there is some digitally induced pixelation. The colours are fairly 'cold' and somewhat muted but the film has never been overly colourful. There are occasional white flecks but these are not off putting.

Thankfully the added scenes are not of a lower quality. These additions are mostly extensions to the beginning or end of already existing scenes. Do they enhance the film? Well, I would have to say, yes they do. In fact I find it difficult to understand why they were cut out. There is one moment between Jennifer and Frau Bruckner, where you first glimpse her insanity, that I think is brilliant! However, the levitation scene is still not present.

For a full list of the differences click here.

sound
Unfortunately the sound doesn't fair very well either. It is presented in English Dolby Surround 2.0 by default and it does make use of it right from the start with the wind swirling around the speakers. However, on occasion the volume levels suddenly change and everything seems to be coming out of all speakers. To be honest, I haven't watched this film in standard surround before, only the 5.1 track of the Anchor Bay release, but it just doesn't sound right to me.

Where the English language track could not be found for the added scenes in this version of the film, it reverts back to the Italian audio. This is carried out with a minimum of disturbance but these sections are not automatically subtitled as Anchor Bay's DEEP RED disc was. You have to select the subtitles from your remote which is somewhat annoying.

Hiss levels are fairly low and clicks and pops are at a minimum.

extras
The biographies and theatrical trailers are on the first disc along with the film. The rest of the extras are on the second disc.

Interview with Dario Argento
Dario seems in a very sombre mood during the interview but I think this may have something to do with the questions he is asked. There are a couple of occasions where he has to correct the interviewer which is never a good sign. And when he is asked ' how did you prepare spiritually to work with insects?' you can almost see the disdain on his face. You certainly don't learn much about PHENOMENA from this line of questioning.

The interview also suffers from clumsily translated (at least the English ones) subtitles. At times it was difficult to understand what the question being asked actually was!

Interview with Claudio Simonetti
This is a much better effort and actually asks some questions that are pertinent and has answers that we don't already know. I particularly enjoyed 'why don't you write some original work instead of recycling old Goblin tunes?', or words to that effect.

Claudio comes across very well and doesn't seem the egomaniac I thought him to be. This interview must have been conducted some time ago as he says nothing about Goblin getting back together to do NONHOSONNO. The English subtitles are still rubbish though.

Interview with Luigi Cozzi
I was also surprised at what a nice guy Luigi seems from this interview. He speaks in English and this time I believe is interviewed by Michael, the head of Dragon Entertainment, in the basement museum of the Profondo Rosso store in Roma.
He talks frankly about his early days and how Dario kick started his career and has helped ever since.

Behind the Scenes Segment
Yes, this is exactly the same segment as on the Anchor Bay dvd! There must be something out there about PHENOMENA that has not already been released on dvd?

VALLEY music video
Where have you seen this before?

JENNIFER music video
And this?

Simonetti plays JENNIFER
This is a recording of Claudio's piano rendition of the tune especially for this disc. It's OK but its not that special either.

PHENOMENA postcard
This is just a picture of a postcard signed by Dario, Claudio and Luigi. Initially the reason for this is not apparent (why is it not part of the PHENOMENA gallery?). However, there is an Easter Egg hidden here which is quite amusing. If you want to know how to access it, click here.

PHENOMENA gallery
Much as you would expect, this is a gallery comprising of stills, behind the scenes photos, Posters, Video jackets, and Lobby cards presented with a music soundtrack. However, you can't control anything; it just scrolls through the ../images at a pre-determined rate.

JENNIFER CONNELLY gallery
Same thing again here; a scrolling collection of stills and publicity photos taken from various sources including one of the wallpapers from the Tribute to Jennifer Connelly site.

conclusion
Overall, I don't think this is a very special 'Special Edition'. The plus points are the presentation; the packaging is lovely and the booklet and discs are nicely designed. It is also a chance to see the 'integral' version of the film. However, the picture and sound quality is not brilliant and easily surpassed by Anchor Bay.

Then there is the extras. Three of these have already been released before on a different disc. The interviews are nice to have but are not extensive or essential. Of course, they are not helped by the avoidably bad subtitles. I realise this disc is aimed at the German market but if you are going to offer English subtitles, at least make the effort to get them right! I also don't feel they warrant a separate disc especially when this bumps the price up.

Not an essential purchase by any means and certainly not for anyone with just a passing interest in the film but it will appeal to Argento/Phenomena completists even if they may end up feeling a bit disappointed.
