As with the Anchor Bay SUSPIRIA release, the image quality of this anamorphic dvd is impressive. The film is shown in it's correct aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and looks all the better for it. The good print and THX mastering have ensured that there are minimal imperfections. There is a line that appears for a few seconds early on in the film but that's about as far as print damage goes.

Until this dvd I had forgotten just what a colourful film OPERA actually is. Everyone talks about SUSPIRIA and INFERNO in this respect but the use of colour and lighting in OPERA is equally as impressive in places. Needless to say that it shines through with this transfer which is beautiful to behold with strong vibrant colours throughout. The black levels are once again spot on and flesh tones appear natural. The image definition is pin sharp and, like SUSPIRIA, the only visible grain is during the lighter scenes. I don't know for sure but I wonder if this has something to do with the THX mastering?

Overall though it is a great picture and beats the Italian dvd by quite some way considering that was the incorrect ratio (1.85:1) and suffered from a mirrored section of film.

I reviewed this dvd with the Dolby Surround EX option. This is an improvement over any previous soundtrack that I have heard as far as dynamics and surround effects are concerned. However, the surround channels are not over used but just add subtle touches here and there. The volume level of the music appears greater on this release than on the Italian dvd. However, I think this is more due to that release being too quite. I also found my opinion of the use of heavy metal music throughout the film to change. I didn't like it initially but watching the film again, I actually now think it fits in quite well. It certainly works better here than it does in PHENOMENA which is a bit ironic considering the subject of OPERA! There is only an English soundtrack as Anchor Bay could not secure the rights to any other language.

This limited edition does not contain as much as the SUSPIRIA disc in fact the only difference between this release and the standard OPERA disc is the addition of the soundtrack CD. I cannot comment on this CD as it was not supplied with this pre-release copy. What we do have is pretty good though. The International and US theatrical trailers are included as well as an Argento biography. Also, another music video by Simonetti's Daemonia, this time playing their version of the main theme. This video is a lot better than the cheesy SUSPIRIA one on that dvd. Then of course there is the 36 minute documentary 'Conducting Dario Argento's Opera'. Once again Anchor Bay have shown what they are capable of producing as an extra with a widescreen, informative and stylish film. There are interviews with Dario, Daria Nicolodi, Ronnie Taylor, Urbano Barberini, Claudio Simonetti and Sergio Stivaletti. You get the impression that OPERA was not a happy production to work on and Dario tells of his deep depression that stayed with him after finishing the film. Cristina Marsillach gave him problems and I don't think he was the only one. A very frank Urbano Barberini whilst describing how difficult it was to tie her to the chair at the end says "I couldn't hit her properly - she was the leading lady and anyway, she had to play other scenes"! There are also liner notes by Michael Felsher describing how OPERA made him a dedicated Argentophile.

conclusion
Anchor Bay have done it again with a wonderful release that every Argento fan will want to own. The only difference between this limited edition and the cheaper standard edition is the soundtrack CD so this will probably determine which one you buy. I found watching this film again that it is rapidly climbing up my list of favourite Argento's. It contains all the elements about his work that I adore and I defy any true cinema lover not to be impressed by it. This is a first class disc of a first class film, buy it now!
