video
Anchor Bay have a good reputation when it comes to picture quality and this no exception. A lovely 2.25:1 anamorphic transfer which makes the film look sharper and brighter than it has for years. The black levels are just right and there is no discernable digitally induced artifacting or grain. Colours are good; no blurring or bleeding and flesh tones are natural. There is very little print damage but the occasional vertical line can be seen. It is interesting to note that the film starts with English language credits but finishes with Italian.

sound
I have to say the stereo surround re-mix is disappointing. Taking into consideration the other great jobs Chase have done on the Dario Argento Collection, this one just isn't very good. It is difficult to tell that the film is in stereo let alone surround sound with almost no activity from the rear speakers. The film soundtrack deserves better especially Morricone's haunting music. This is somewhat ironic as the disc contains an interview with the great man himself.

extras
The major extra is an interview with Argento, Dardano Sacchetti and Ennio Morricone. All of them give a frank view on the making of the film and Dario admits once again this is his least favourite. He also talks about his first impression of Morricone and how certain effects were achieved in the film. Very relaxed. Morricone talks of his first involvement with Dario and the different type of music he brought to his films. Sacchetti tells how he learnt a lot from the crypt scene in the film. There are also two trailers, two TV spots, two radio spots, an 8 minute radio interview with James Franciscus, an 8 minute radio interview with Karl Malden and a stills gallery. All good stuff.

conclusion
Once again Anchor Bay have done Dario proud with another nice entry into their Argento Collection. You will not have seen CAT looking and sounding so good before. The disc also has a good array of extras making it an essential purchase for any Argentophile.
