If you want a review of the actual film, click here. TWO EVIL EYES had a theatrical release in France. But critics were awful to it (in 1990, French general movie magazines still hated Argento : they did not change their minds before 1998). Horror magazines did not like it much. It was not a public success. Later, it was released as a video, in an ugly 1.33 presentation.

The uncut print has English titles and the original 1.85:1 presentation is respected. Yet it looks tired. You can notice many black and white specs or scratches on the screen, as well as one hair caught in the frame at a particular moment! The picture is not completely stable and is slightly shaking. Colours seem correct, but they are a little too pale. The contrasts could have been stronger, especially in some dark scenes where the blacks sometimes turn blue or green. Some scenes are grainy. Yet, these weaknesses won't really prevent you from enjoying this movie. But for a 1990 movie, this is a disappointment, especially if compared to some other French dvd's ("Stendhal", "Bird...", "Suspiria"...). Yet, the compression is perfect. It seems it's been made with an average made-for-TV-broadcast copy. Anchor Bay won't have much to do to beat this edition as far as picture is concerned.
sound
The English 2.0 sound is a little disappointing too. It has some obvious distortion and it lacks dynamics. At one point, a disturbing electronic noise can be noticed. It feels like the music could have been more powerful. Yet, it's rather clean, and the sound quality won't distract you from the movie. The mono French audio soundtrack has the same weaknesses, and the dubbing is poor. French electronic sub-titles are available : if you select the English soundtrack, they can't be switched off on most dvd players (but they are not 'burnt-in').
extras
The presentation is a still menu showing the face of an owl, with a soundtrack made up of music and screams. The extras are few. You will find three scrolling filmographies : Harvey Keitel, George Romero and Dario Argento. Romero and Argento filmographies start with short bios. They tell that, before becoming a director, Argento was an assistant of Mario Bava : strange, I've never heard about this! A PHANTOM OF THE OPERA 'making of...' is available. It is the same average video filmed on set that appears on the A Pix US dvd of PHANTOM. It has a few French subtitles on it. Not really interesting...
