I have heard from Alan Jones today and he tells me that NONHOSONNO/SLEEPLESS has been confirmed for the FrightFest in London this August! It will be screened at the Prince Charles cinema on Saturday August 25th at 21.00.

Alan hopes to persuade Dario to come over and introduce the film although it is very close to the start of production on his new one.

This is a reply from Medusa regarding the confusion about the NONHOSONNO DVD run times:

This is a reply regarding the thread posted by Martin Blythe at the Home Theatre Forum asking what titles Paramount should release next year:

June 25, 2001 03:20 PM CST (US)
"Since some of you are getting agitated about the poll results, here is where we are. I submitted ALL the most requested titles, which came out between 40 and 50 in number. The list was well received here. The next step is to check out the state of the original materials and that can take a long time. Then we would move onto what bonus materials, if any, should be produced. In short, the list is the backbone of our catalogue releases for 2002 and 2003. Even the real obscure titles (yeah, I'm thinking of Four Flies). So thanks everyone. The system is working.... Be patient."

Good news I think you will agree!

Thanks to Terry for the info.

There will be a new DVD of PHENOMENA from French label TF1 on July 18th. The soundtracks will be French mono and English mono. French subtitles will be available.

The picture will be slightly cropped 1.77:1 and be anamorphic widescreen. It is supposed to last 103 minutes and will probably be the version that has always been shown in France. Extras will be a few filmographies and a 20 minute interview with Dario.

Thanks to Manu for the info.

Yes, at last the ultimate PHENOMENA DVD has been released by Dragon Entertainment! I received my copy in the post this morning and initial impressions are favourable.

The packaging is gorgeous but is only cardboard so will need to be looked after. The picture quality looks good and the English audio track is effective Dolby Surround. Of the extras I have only checked out some of the interview with Dario which is hampered by badly translated but understandable English subtitles.

There will be a full review to follow shortly.

Described by an Irish film critic as 'Argento-like' in places, Underworld is a 'supernatural chiller' and is available to broadband internet users at www.dark-island.com (min 128kps connection).

It is part of a series created for the web called The Dark Island Chronicles. It was written, directed, and financed by Ronan Gallagher and has a unique pay per view policy in that all comers get to see 90% of the film for free. They only pay to see the end. Part of their payment goes towards the budget in the next film in the series and so on.

Check it out.

Tommy Løhrdal is arranging the 11th Oslo International Film Festival where they have shown several Argento movies over the years. He is trying to get NONHOSONNO and Argento himself to attend the festival in Oslo, Norway. However, nothing is confirmed at this point as they are negotiating with Argento and his people...

In a recent visit to the Profondo Rosso shop in Roma, Luigi Cozzi said that Dario was already prepping for the shoot of his new film OCCHIALI NERI which is planned to take place in September.
It is the second film in the Medusa giallo trilogy. The script is completed apart from any rewriting that may occur over the course of summer.

It looks like Tartan are going to delay their UK DVD of TRAUMA until 2002. However, the reason for this will be worth the wait I can assure you. I can't say anymore at the moment but, if all goes according to plan, it will truly be a Special Edition.

A reliable source informs me that the print Divid 2000 (now called Impact) have obtained for their UK DVD of BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE is anamorphic 2.35:1 but has subtitles 'burnt' into the print.
This is somewhat ironic considering it is advertised on blackstar.co.uk as 'dubbed into English'.

There was an article on Adriano Celentano in last week's Independent on Sunday newspaper, which mentioned Asia who's appearing on his scandalous new Italian TV show.

"Among the attractions of the two-hour weekly show... are his co-host, the heavily pregnant and scantily clad actress, Asia Argento, daughter of the horror director Dario Argento. Argento displayed her tattooed belly for the cover of a news magazine last week. Celentano has mustered an eclectic cast, convincing one leading newspaper editor to play a victim on the electric chair, and another to be a man destroyed by a transgenic tomato."

After Dario's trip to the Amsterdam Film Festival here are a few interesting bits of information sent to me by Mike Lebbing.

Dario is no stranger to the festival and Amsterdam; this was his third time at the festival, the previous times being the Dutch premiere's of TRAUMA and THE STENDHAL SYNDROME.

Dario was looking through a copy of the ART OF DARKNESS book, he seemed to like the pictures and Japanese artwork very much, but couldn't be coaxed into making a statement about the text.

In an interview, Dario wanted to stress the point that NONHOSONNO is a loose, modern film for him; some of the action is less stylized than usual, especially the scenes through the train corridors. The camera operator had a special camera tied to his back and then Dario had the poor fellow run through the corridor on all fours! Hence the fiercely shaking image, which is very unlike the usual smoothness of the steady cam work in Argento's pictures. Coupled with the difficulty in lighting the corridor this posed a lot of technical problems.

Also the 'carpet crawl' was prepared one day, then shot the next. It took ten takes; Dario was very happy with that particular shot and said that ten takes is very little for such a complicated scene. He sees DP Ronnie Taylor as a brother, who completely understands what he wants. He added that Taylor was very happy to work under normal circumstances again after the extremely tiring and unhealthy shoot of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in Budapest.

He also said that the third part of this giallo trilogy, of which NONHOSONNO is the first, is supposed to be even gorier!

Monday evening Dario got the lifetime achievement award in the sold out Kriterion Cinema. He made a very funny speech, including a great parody of Roberto Beginini's Oscar-speech for La Vita e Bella.

The screening of NONHOSONNO was the first outside Italy (except for the recent US screenings which weren't for the public) and was made possible only at the last minute with the enthusiasm and perseverance of Mr. Pruissers, head and director of Dutch Film Works. They have bought NONHOSONNO for further Dutch video and DVD distribution, great news considering the good job they have done with THE STENDHAL SYNDROME.

Thanks for the info Mike.

April 15th 2001

It is written by Xavier Mendik and you can order it priced £9.99 via email from flicks.books@dial.pipex.com or by post at:

Flicks Books
