April 17th 2001 After Dario's trip to the Amsterdam Film Festival here are a few interesting bits of information sent to me by Mike Lebbing. Dario is no stranger to the festival and Amsterdam; this was his third time at the festival, the previous times being the Dutch premiere's of TRAUMA and THE STENDHAL SYNDROME. Dario was looking through a copy of the ART OF DARKNESS book, he seemed to like the pictures and Japanese artwork very much, but couldn't be coaxed into making a statement about the text. In an interview, Dario wanted to stress the point that NONHOSONNO is a loose, modern film for him; some of the action is less stylized than usual, especially the scenes through the train corridors. The camera operator had a special camera tied to his back and then Dario had the poor fellow run through the corridor on all fours! Hence the fiercely shaking image, which is very unlike the usual smoothness of the steady cam work in Argento's pictures. Coupled with the difficulty in lighting the corridor this posed a lot of technical problems. Also the 'carpet crawl' was prepared one day, then shot the next. It took ten takes; Dario was very happy with that particular shot and said that ten takes is very little for such a complicated scene. He sees DP Ronnie Taylor as a brother, who completely understands what he wants. He added that Taylor was very happy to work under normal circumstances again after the extremely tiring and unhealthy shoot of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in Budapest. He also said that the third part of this giallo trilogy, of which NONHOSONNO is the first, is supposed to be even gorier! Monday evening Dario got the lifetime achievement award in the sold out Kriterion Cinema. He made a very funny speech, including a great parody of Roberto Beginini's Oscar-speech for La Vita e Bella. The screening of NONHOSONNO was the first outside Italy (except for the recent US screenings which weren't for the public) and was made possible only at the last minute with the enthusiasm and perseverance of Mr. Pruissers, head and director of Dutch Film Works. They have bought NONHOSONNO for further Dutch video and DVD distribution, great news considering the good job they have done with THE STENDHAL SYNDROME. Thanks for the info Mike.
April 15th 2001 My reliable sources tell me that a UK video company acquired the rights to NONHOSONNO/SLEEPLESS some time ago. Not only do they have the video rights but they are also considering a limited theatrical release.

April 11th 2001 There is a Japanese DVD of TRAUMA due on the 25th April according to Sazuma . Thanks to Manu for the info.
April 11th 2001 There is now a picture at www.filmevents.nl of Dario receiving his lifetime achievement award at the 17th Amsterdam Fantasy Film Festival. The theatre was completely sold out and Dario seemed very glad to be there. Thanks to Michael for the info.

March 24th 2001 I am now allowed to give you details of what WAS going to be Dario's new film. It was to be a sequel to PHENOMENA and would involve extensive underwater sequences. In fact, Ronny Taylor had been experimenting with new camera techniques. However, this is no longer going to happen and another giallo looks like being his next project. Thanks to Alan for the info.
March 24th 2001 I just got news that Asia has been involved in a serious car crash. Thankfully she and her baby are OK. The accident was not her fault. I am sure all of us wish her a speedy recovery. Thanks to Alan for the info.
March 22nd 2001 Just got this email from Harvey: " FAB Press has relocated to new premises. In clearing out the old stock room, we have discovered small quantities of some books which were previously thought to be sold out. Back in stock for a short period of time are ART OFDARKNESS and the standard hardback edition of Beyond Terror. If you missed out first time, now is your chance to buy these books."
March 18th 2001 It looks like Anchor Bay took notice of all of us who mailed them about the forthcoming SUSPIRIA DVD. From DVD Maniacs : "When Dario Argento's classic horror film is released on DVD it will contain a new hour long featurette with interviews with all the major people involved with the making of the film including Argento, Goblin and Jessica Harper." Thanks to Edwin for the info.
March 17th 2001 According to Anchor Bay, the soundtrack CD that will be available with the SUSPIRIA DVD will be the same as the recent European re-release. Sounds like a cheap way of providing an 'extra' to me. Thanks to John for the info.

There maybe some more extras coming soon. They hope to be able to release it in the next two months. |

February 25th 2001 ART OF DARKNESS has sold out! All of the stock has gone from FABPress so they have stopped the order facility for it. I didn't expect it to sell out that fast even though they did only print 3000.
February 24th 2001 According to www.blackstar.co.uk the Divid 2000 UK DVD releases of BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE and PROFONDO ROSSO have been delayed again until June at the earliest. However, it does list an interview with Dario and Claudio Simonetti and a behind the scenes featurette as extra's on the latter.

The disc will have a limited pressing of 40,000. Expect a booklet and different artwork than the single disc release." |

February 07th 2001 I received my ART OF DARKNESS book from FABPress this morning. The verdict? Lets just say that every self respecting Argentophile must have this book! I have not fully read it yet of course but can see straight away the amount of care taken in getting this project right. It is full of never before seen stills, posters and lobby cards, with loads in colour. Well worth the wait. Thanks Harvey.

However, if you spot any lingering bugs we would appreciate your feedback. kind regards, Harvey Fenton FAB Press England http://www.fabpress.com/" Hooray at last! |
February 02nd 2001 You will be pleased to learn that Dario is taking the utmost care to ensure that the English language version of NONHOSONNO is perfect. This is why it is still not completed. There are one or two issues about an English language version that could be problematic as far as the plot goes and it will be interesting to see how these are dealt with. For more details click here .
February 01st 2001 Dario is to be a judge at the 51st Berlin International Film Festival. The festival runs between February 7-18 at Potsdamer Platz. Other jury members include British actress Jacqueline Bisset, French star Dominique Blanc and Chinese director Xie Fei.

It features brand new interviews with John Carpenter, George Romero, Michael Brandon, Tom Savini, Daria Nicolodi, Asia Argento and, of course, Dario himself. Best regards, Mike Ruggiero IFC Programming Department & co-executive producer of the show for the network" This of course is the documentary that Alan Jones worked on last year and was shown at FrightFest 2000 in the UK. At least this is the first confirmation of when and where it will be shown in the US. |

January 23rd 2001 I got this mail from Harvey at FABPress today: "Art of Darkness on sale 31 January ! Delivery of the first edition of Art of Darkness has been confirmed for 31 January 2001. Ordering facilities for this book will be available at the FAB Press website on this date. Art of Darkness, the definitive, 304 page guide to the cinema of Dario Argento, Italy's master of horror, costs just 19.99 plus p+p." At last it looks like we will see this much anticipated book.
January 22nd 2001 I have just received a copy of the re-pressed BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE DVD from VCI. The previous problem of an incorrect frame sequence during the 'pantie ripping' murder has been put right and the DARK DREAMS URL has also been updated. It has the same catalogue number as the old version but the text on the rear cover is different and does not now refer to 'Susperia'.
January 22nd 2001 NONHOSONNO has already made it's money back after only two weeks and is still only being shown in Northern Italy. This is great news for Dario and should allow him more financial freedom for his next project.
January 22nd 2001 I have just received this email from Harvey at FABPress regarding 'Art of Darkness': "The first edition of Art of Darkness will be exclusively paperback. As the printers had altered my files without informing me in advance to produce perfect bound editions only, I cancelled the hardback at this stage as I did not want to put out a perfect-bound paperback. Perfect binding is fine for paperbacks, but I had to insist that if I am to release a hardback edition the binding MUST be sewn. My printers tell me the paperbacks will be here 31 January (ho ho ho)... This has meant that the hardback version has been put back until I have recouped income on the first edition, to cover the costs of setting up with a new printing company to produce the hardback version. This may take more like 3 to 5 months to achieve. best wishes and thanks for your enquiry Harvey Fenton"
January 09th 2001 UK audiences will get a chance to see NONHOSONNO at this years FrightFest at the Prince Charles in London. Dario has said that if he is not shooting, he will also attend the screening.
January 09th 2001 NONHOSONNO (it is a one word title) opened at 100 screens in Northern Italy on 05th. The world premiere took place in Roma at the Fiamma the following night. According to Medusa, the film has done good business over the weekend period. It opens in the rest of Italy on the 12th.
December 28th 2000 NON HO SONNO has been acclaimed as Dario's best film since SUSPIRIA at the national press screening in Italy today! Needless to say, Dario is thrilled. After suffering at the hands of critics in recent years, it must be a great feeling. The world premiere takes place in Rome on Saturday 6th January. Thanks to Alan for the info.
December 17th 2000 Just in case you were wondering, here are the latest release dates for the UK Argento DVD's: The Bird Of Crystal Plumage - 19th Feb 2001 Profondo Rosso - 22nd Jan 2001
December 17th 2000 NON HO SONNO has been finished after dubbing took place last week. I can confirm that it will only have a score by GOBLIN. The premiere is in Turin on January 05th and is followed by the world premiere in Rome a couple of days later. These dates are only provisional as the film has not yet been certified by the authorities or the cinema's booked. Thanks to Alan for the info.
December 16th 2000 Guess what? Yes, 'Art of Darkness' has been delayed again! Whilst this will not come as a surprise to anyone I am sure that this book is going to well worth the wait. Here is what the FABPress web site has to say on the matter: "Sorry, but due to circumstances beyond our control, the release of Art of Darkness has been delayed until Friday, 12 January 2001. We have decided to suspend the pre-ordering facility for this book until the stock has actually been dispatched from the printers. If you would like to order this book, please check back on Thursday, 11 January 2001, at which time you will be able to order Art of Darkness."
December 11th 2000 In response to my posting below about the FAB Press on-line ordering of 'Art of Darkness', I received this mail from Harvey Fenton today: Hi, Just to update you on the ordering situation for Art of Darkness. We are currently using an American Credit Card processing organisation, which is why people need to pay in dollars on-line right now. This will be changed in the New Year, but it's all we have until then. The system only allows one shipping charge for the whole world (typical of an American system really...), so the price has been balanced to favour American customers - please note that it will cost us approximately 15 pounds to send each book to the USA by Airmail, so as far as US customer are concerned, the price is more than fair; this pricing policy is necessary at the moment as over 85% of all orders being taken at FAB Press On-line come from people in the USA... Basic answer to the point raised on your site about shipping is that people are welcome to use the printable order form and send in cheques as usual. The bonus for people who do use the on-line system is that if they are in the UK their order will be despatched by Special Delivery (next day service). Sorry for the slowly evolving ordering system; it's the best we can do for now - however, we do hope to have a fully featured on-line system which will charge people in their own currency and add appropriate shipping charges to each order dependent on the weight of their shipment and the part of the world they live in, but it will be early 2001 before this is in place. Best wishes and thanks for your interest. Harvey Fenton FAB Press England http://www.fabpress.com
December 06th 2000 FAB Press have now made 'Art of Darkness' available for pre-ordering on-line. However due to the fact that they are only accepting US Dollars, at the current exchange rate, any UK customers will end up paying quite a bit more than the stated sterling price of the book if they use this method. In fact I worked it out as nearer £37.00 for the hardback edition! I'm going to print out the order form and mail it with a cheque, far cheaper.
